Afshar Malik was born in Bahawalpur, Punjab (Pakistan) in 1955. His career as a printmaker began after he graduated with a degree in Fine Art from National College of Arts, Lahore and after further studies in Fine Art at Slade School in London. He went on to lecture in printmaking, drawing and painting at the National College of Arts, Lahore and regularly exhibits in solo and group shows across Asia. Afshars earliest works, with their linear, attenuated figuration conformed to the prevailing aesthetics of the day. He gradually departed from this tradition when he came in contact with the great sculptural traditions of the world: prehistoric and primitive, archaic Greek, Etruscan and also that of his own region.
